Mythical Creatures Writing Craft Activity (Create Your Own Mythical Creature)

Create a mythical creature with this writing craftivity. This LOW PREP resource guides students step-by-step through the process of describing their mythical creature in such great detail that a partner can accurately draw it.

It makes a great addition to your magic or Halloween unit study; writing lessons or centers; or just for fun. Perfect for first grade, second grade, and third grade classrooms, homeschool families, and cooperatives.

ELEMENTS INCLUDE: 

• Teacher instructions
• Mythical creature booklets (head, ears, eyes, mouth, nose, neck, body, arms, legs, tail, other physical features, habitat, physical adaptations, behavioral adaptations, diet, life cycle, communication, predators and threats, and magic powers)
• Magic power cards (100 unique powers)
• Drawing graphic organizers (1 for the student and 1 for the student's partner)
• Creative writing graphic organizers (2 levels)

After printing the cards, each student should pick or be assigned 2 magic powers for their mythical creature. (There are 4,950 unique combinations of the cards.) Students will write about their creature in the provided booklet, leaving out any traits they don't want it to have. Then, students will draw and color their creatures (but keep it a secret).

Students will give their completed booklets to a partner, who will then draw and color the creature based only on the booklet. Once complete, the partners will exchange drawings to see how close they came to the original intent.
